2022 Chalari Mataro
Tasting Notes
Pairs well with
100% organic Mataro (aka Mourvèdre or Monastrell) from Franklin River in Western Australia, 13.5% ABV.
Tasting notes: Rose petals, sarsaparilla and Sichuan pepper. Beaujolais-inspired, this Mataro is light bodied with forest berries, apple skins and balanced oak throughout. Hint of savouriness and complexity, dusty tannins with a beautiful long finish. Enjoy chilled or at room temperature.
Chalari started in 2017 in a shed (like most legendary brands) in the Perth Hills from the hands of Alexi Christidis and two tonnes of premium Frankland River riesling.
Originally from the tech world, Alexi had a strong pull to winemaking and in 2017 received his Bachelor of Wine Sciences from the venerable Charles Sturt University. The following year he traveled around France to learn about various winemaking techniques and styles, and to do harvest in Champagne.
Chalari, Greek for ‘relaxed’, is indicative of Alexi’s approach to life and his winemaking style. Sourcing the best quality fruit from around Western Australia, Charlari produces a number of traditional and lo-fi wines. In 2020 and 2024, Alexi was a finalist for Top Winemaker for Young Gun of Wine Awards.
