Origin: Frankland River, Australia
Type: Medium-bodied red
Grape(s): Mataro
ABV: 13.5%

Delicate rose petals, sarsaparilla, and a crackle of Sichuan pepper leap from the glass, giving this wine a fragrant, spicy edge right from the start. Inspired by Beaujolais but made from Mataro, it wears its lighter frame with confidence - this isn’t your typical brooding expression of the grape. The palate is all about brightness and lift - forest berries, red apple skin, and gentle, well-integrated oak that adds subtle spice and polish without overshadowing the fruit.

Chalari started in 2017 in a shed (like most legendary brands) in the Perth Hills from the hands of Alexi Christidis and two tonnes of premium Frankland River riesling.

Originally from the tech world, Alexi had a strong pull to winemaking and in 2017 received his Bachelor of Wine Sciences from the venerable Charles Sturt University. The following year he traveled around France to learn about various winemaking techniques and styles, and to do harvest in Champagne.

Chalari, Greek for ‘relaxed’, is indicative of Alexi’s approach to life and his winemaking style. Sourcing the best quality fruit from around Western Australia, Charlari produces a number of traditional and lo-fi wines. In 2020 and 2024, Alexi was a finalist for Top Winemaker for Young Gun of Wine Awards.
