2021 Chalari x Swan Valley Wines Vermentino Chenin
Tasting Notes
Pairs well with
60% organic Vermentino and 40% Chenin Blanc from Swan Valley; 13% ABV.
A collaboration wine between longtime mates Alexi (Chalari) and Paul (Swan Valley Wines). Two amazing varieties (that are also great on their own) blended to create a beautiful skin contact "baby" orange wine.
Baked apple pie and lemon myrtle on the nose; a pine/lime vibe on the palate with passionfruit, apricot, saline and slightly grippy texture. Vibrant fruit is heavily woven with savoury and textural elements from skin contact and fermentation in qvevri.
Chalari started in 2017 in a shed (like most legendary brands) in the Perth Hills from the hands of Alexi Christidis and two tonnes of premium Frankland River riesling.
Originally from the tech world, Alexi had a strong pull to winemaking and in 2017 received his Bachelor of Wine Sciences from the venerable Charles Sturt University. The following year he traveled around France to learn about various winemaking techniques and styles, and to do harvest in Champagne.
Chalari, Greek for ‘relaxed’, is indicative of Alexi’s approach to life and his winemaking style. Sourcing the best quality fruit from around Western Australia, Charlari produces a number of traditional and lo-fi wines. In 2020 and 2024, Alexi was a finalist for Top Winemaker for Young Gun of Wine Awards.
